The Campus Safety Support Services NPC and the South African Police Services (SAPS) will be hosting a Seminar on Gender-Based Violence and Abuse in Colleges and Universities during August 2018 in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. The events will take place on 4 August 2018 at the SAPS Academy in Hammanskraal, 9 August 2018 at TUT Soshanguve Campus and 10-11 August 2018 at Lillian Ngoyi Museum in Pretoria.

The Gender-Based Violence Seminar will also mark the launch of the National Campus Crime Awareness Month for the various colleges and universities in South Africa.

The hosting of the Gender-Based Violence events follows the recent surge in violent campus crimes which resulted in the shooting of two female students Zolile Khumalo and Jolile Nhlapo by their ex-partners at their respective student residences in Durban and Vanderbijlpark.

The Gender-Based Violence Seminar will be addressed by key speakers and presenters to address this campus crime phenomenon and to share common strategies and action plans to deal effectively with violent campus crimes such as sexual assault, rape and the killing of women.

The event hosted on 3 August 2018 at the SAPS Academy in Hammanskraal will include staff and students from the Tshwane North TVET Temba Campus as well as educators and learners from the local schools in Tshwane North.

Inter-faith spiritual leaders from the local churches and community leaders will also be invited to participate in this inaugural event. “We are indeed excited to co-host such an important event at the SAPS Academy in Hammanskraal as part of our mandate to share knowledge on combating gender-based violence in our surrounding communities”, says Commander Dineo Raphahlela, head of the SAPS Academy in Hammanskraal.

On 9-11 August 2018, the Campus Safety Support Services NPC will host the “Dealing with Gender-Based Violence Seminar” in partnership with the SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit at the Tshwane University of Technology Soshanguve Campus and the Lillian Ngoyi Museum in Pretoria.
