Prof Wiseman Nkuhlu re-elected as new Chancellor of UP

Professor Lumkile Wiseman Nkuhlu was unanimously re-elected chancellor of the University of Pretoria, on 28 June, by the University’s Electoral College.

He was appointed for a period of five years, until 30 June 2022. He has served as UP chancellor since 2006.

Prof Nkuhlu has over 30 years’ experience in executive leadership of major organisations, including universities, professional organisations and an international agency, working with leadership at the highest level in both public and private sectors. He was the first Chairman of the Council for Higher Education and is currently a trustee of the International Financial Standards Reporting Foundation.

Prof Nkuhlu was appointed as the first Chairman of the Steering Committee and Chief Executive of the Secretariat for the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) in 2001 and held this role until 2005.

In this role he led the technical development of socio-economic renewal programmes for key areas including peace and conflict resolution, trans-boundary infrastructure, health and agriculture.

He also led the NEPAD discussions between Africa representatives and representatives of the G8 countries and developed and implemented a NEPAD advocacy and communication strategy.

Prof Nkuhlu graduated from Fort Hare University in 1970 with a BCom degree and in 1976 became South Africa’s first black chartered accountant. He also holds an MBA from the University of New York.

He was voted in at a meeting of the Electoral College held on 28 June 2017.
