After a rigorous selection process, sixty (60) safety and security management students were ultimately selected to participate in the innovative Campus Safety Cadets Work Readiness Program at the Tshwane University of Technology Soshanguve Campus.

The Campus Safety Cadets is a brainchild of the Campus Safety Support Services (CASS) and is primarily aimed to prepare students studying Policing, Correction Studies and Traffic Policing for a learnership and employment in the security industry after the completion of their undergraduate studies.

The Campus Safety Cadets Work Readiness Program is an 18 weeks intensive program which is hosted every Friday and Saturday from 1 August 2019 to 30 November 2019. The Work Readiness Program includes Physical Fitness Training Program, Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) Accredited Grades C, D, and E-Security Course and PSIRA Accredited Campus and School Safety and Security Training Program Levels 1-3.

The PSIRA Accredited Courses will ensure that the students are registered as accredited security officers with the PSIRA, whilst the rigorous Physical Fitness Training Program will ensure that the students meet the fitness standard expected for a safety and security officer in the safety and security industry.

According to the program pioneer, Segomotso Sebokedi-Phetlhu, “The Campus Safety Cadets Work Readiness Program was established as an intervention to empower students with competencies and attributes to be able to access employment opportunities after completion of their studies”.

In 2020 the Campus Safety Cadets Work Readiness Program will be extended to include 300 qualifying safety and security students from the first year to the third year.

In 2020 the Campus Cadets Program will be extended to include other academic disciplines including Hospitality, Tourism Management, Adventure Tourism, Nature Conservation, Horticulture, Journalism, Film and Photography, Town Planning, Architecture, Interior Designers, Information and Communication Technology, Graphic Design, Retail Business Management, and Marketing.

The Extended Campus Cadets Program will ultimately register about 1500 students who will complete a 6 to 10 months Work Readiness Program during the 2020 academic year. In the next five years, it is envisaged that CASSS and its sister companies should be able to provide about five thousand (5,000) student jobs per annum.
