A historic agreement signed between the South African Student Support Services Agency (SASSS) and the South African State Theatre on 9 February 2017 will make it affordable for student communities to go to the theatre. This initiative will also assist in the promotion of the State Theatre as a leisure hub for the youth and students in the city.

According to the SASSS Agency, “Appreciation of the arts is a desirable graduate attribute for student. Going to theatre, cinema, art exhibition, music concert or any such form of entertainment is a good thing for students.

“A learning outcome of this exposure is for students to have a personal definition of art derived from knowledge and experience with a variety of art forms”.

The historic partnership will be officially launched at the Premiere of Sarafina The Musical on Friday 10 March 2017 at The Opera, South African State Theatre in Pretoria

One of this country’s most iconic symbols of the struggle for social and political freedom and justice, Sarafina! was conceived and directed by Mbongeni Ngema, who also wrote the book, music and lyrics with additional songs by Hugh Masekela.

The Broadway hit musical is a musical experience with songs performed in the tradition of Mbaqanga, fused with jazz, rhythm and blues and gospel. This proudly South African musical, set during the 1976 uprisings in Soweto, deals with the radicalization of a young school girl who becomes embroiled in the riots and is tortured by the South African Police. The musical is set in the Morris Isaacson High School against the backdrop of students revolting against Afrikaans being used as a medium of instruction.

The play, which depicts students involved in the 1976 Soweto Uprising against apartheid, was created in June 1986 and premiered at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg in June 1987, with Leleti Khumalo in the title role as the school girl activist, Sarafina.

The preview shows are scheduled for 28 February 2017 to 9 March 2017. The Premiere is on 10 March 2017. The production will be playing on Tuesdays to Sundays (excluding Mondays) from 28 February 2017 to 20 May 2017.
